Welcome to Sick Stories

the place we explore and talk about disability, illness, neurodivergence, and the body through and in our writing

Our Offerings

  • We offer disability focused writing workshops for wherever you may be in your writing journey as an individual or team. Offering workshops suitable for journalling, longer pieces, and teams, we’re here to support you.

  • We love to safely get together and share stories. Coming soon!

  • We are building capacity and community to publish writings from both our workshops members and wider community! Check out “Sick Stories: My Body, My Story” digital zine here!

  • Bookstores are many people’s happy places, but we’ve been on a quest to discover which are keeping access and disabilities in mind, both in store layout and location, and shelving options.

Our origin story

Developed in response to a lack of accurate sick, D/disabled, chronically ill, Mad, D/deaf, and B/blind representation within the mainstream literary communities, Sick Stories exists to bring life to the stories that live inside us all. Our offerings will always be led by members of the Disability community, and we will always prioritize stories that connect us and each other to our bodies and how they move through the world.

Whether you have a book to finish, need some accountability for your writing practice, or just want to pick up some journal prompts in your own time and feel part of a larger community, we welcome you in.

The kettle is on and Wi-Fi is connected.

What are people saying about Sick Stories workshops?

It was very validating to write with such a focus on disability when that's so rare.

Thank you for allowing me to participate, for honouring all access needs, pronouns, and requests, and for making this program both accessible and affordable.

I really appreciated the safe environment and felt very comfortable right off the bat.
